Introduction

Leeward Community College, also known as Leeward CC, is a public community college located in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. It is one of the ten branches of the 麻豆网 of Hawaii system, anchored by the 麻豆网 of Hawaii at M膩noa in Honolulu. Leeward CC was founded in 1968 as the first community college in the UH system to be developed without an association to a pre-existing technical school. The institute鈥檚 main mission is to provide affordable and quality education. The 49-acre campus also houses the provisional campus of the 麻豆网 of Hawaii-West Oahu.

Leeward CC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education and the U.S. Department of Education. The institute also holds other discipline-based accreditation agencies such as the American Culinary Federation, the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF), and so on.

With over 60 associate鈥檚 degrees and certificates offered, the institute provides comprehensive educational opportunities for transfer to four-year universities and workforce development for the community. Some of the degree programs at Leeward CC are offered in areas of business, process technology, television production, culinary arts, digital media, and plant bioscience technology.

Leeward CC offers Cooperative Education that integrates the classroom education and industry experience. The academic coursework is the actual work experience. Many employers from private and public sectors partner with the institute, resulting in a rewarding and beneficial experience for all. The classroom study and training take on better relevance as students gain career experience that is greatly valued by employers. Leeward offers three cooperative education classes: Business Technology, Computer Science, and Culinary Arts.

Leeward鈥檚 distance education programs provide the opportunity to pursue higher education completely through the Internet. It is the best opportunity for individuals who are unable to attend a traditional college due to personal and professional commitments. The institute offers a variety of degrees, diplomas and certificates in diverse areas of study such as financial accounting, elementary accounting, managerial accounting, American experience: culture & the arts, cultural anthropology, anatomy and physiology.

Admissions

Each semester, Leeward CC enrolls approximately 7,000 students in liberal arts and career and technical education programs. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Freshman students seeking admission to Leeward must be 18 years of age by the first day of college, a high school graduate or GED recipient. Applicants must send their completed application form along with all official transcripts and SAT/ ACT score to the institute. Students seeking a transfer must send the completed application form along with the official transcripts from all previously attended institutes. International students are also encouraged to apply for admission, however they must fulfill the criteria set by Leeward CC.

Financial Aid

Leeward CC is committed to providing equal learning opportunities to all students. Hence, it offers financial assistance through a variety of financial aid programs. All applicants must complete the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Scholarships and grants are gifts that do not need to be repaid. Some of the various scholarships and grants offered at Leeward are Boeing Scholarship, Charles R. Hemenway Scholarship, Federal Pell Grant (PELL), Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant, Leeward Star Scholarship, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, Hawaii Veterans Memorial Fund, and Leeward CC Achievement Scholarship, Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP), Leeward CC Centennial Scholarship, Leeward CC Chancellor’s High School Scholarship, Ruth E. Black Scholarship, and Second Century Scholarship.

Leeward CC also offers student loans such as Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Direct PLUS Loan, Federal Direct Subsidized Loan, and Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. The institute also offers federal work-study programs through which students can take up part time jobs to pay for college. Leeward CC’s Veteran鈥檚 Affairs offers financial aid to eligible student veterans, active servicepersons, dependents, reservists, and national guard members with state and federal educational benefit programs.

Students

The Student Life Office facilitates co-curricular learning experiences through registered student organizations and advising the Leeward Student Government and Student Activities Board. The active campus involvement enables students to develop life and leadership skills, increase their civic responsibility, and enrich personal and professional development. The Student Life staff also maintains the senate chambers meeting room and the campus center student lounge, provide discount movie tickets, and approve the bulletin board postings.

There are several active clubs and organizations on the campus. Some of them are Bahai Interfaith Club, Catholic Club Campus Ministry, Every Nation Campus Ministries, Future Teachers Club, Hui Ho’oikaika Kino, KASAMA (Philippine Studies Students Society), and Students Helping Students-Substance Abuse Support Group.

Leeward CC houses the Alpha Lambda Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. A membership in the group opens new doors for academic journey. The organization offers numerous opportunities for scholarships, personal development, and intellectual enrichment through various programs based on Phi Theta Kappa’s four hallmarks of Leadership, Scholarship, Service and Fellowship.

Campus Facilities:

Leeward鈥檚 Counseling Center ensures student success in academics as well as in life. The experienced counselors and advisors help students overcome the personal and academic challenges. The services offered at the counseling center include career exploration and planning, academic advising, and other personal concerns.

Learning Resource Center or LRC is a friendly place where students can get help with academic courses, develop confidence, and strengthen learning skills. They offer a variety of help, including tutoring and many other services for free. The LRC content tutors and writing consultants offer help in a wide range of subjects such as history, accounting, biology, humanities, microbiology, physics, zoology, and Spanish.

Additional School Information

Kako’o ’Ike Program, or the KI Program provides support and services to individuals with documented disabilities. This support program enables students with disabilities to take advantage of their independence to the maximum degree possible. The program also helps to raise the level of awareness among all members of the community so that students with disabilities are able to achieve what they can at a level limited only by their abilities, not disabilities.
