Established in 1919 as the New School for Social Research; The New School is private, non-profit research-intensive Â鶹Íø located in New York City. Between 1997 and 2005, the institute was known as New School Â鶹Íø. It was finally renamed as the New School in 2005. The institution is known for its quality education, housing, facilities and international think tank.

The New School is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It is a member of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. The Â鶹Íø offers more than 85 graduate and undergraduate degree-granting programs and majors. It also offers a variety of certificate programs and over 650 continuing education courses to over 6,350 adult learners every year.
The New School is home to several key Institutes and Research Centers that are focused on diverse fields of study. Their work is mainly focused in the following areas: International Affairs and Global Perspectives; Art, Design, and Theory; Philosophy and Intellectual Culture; Politics, Policy, and Society; Environment; Urban and Community Development; Education; and The Center for New York City Affairs.
The New School is composed of the following academic divisions: The New School for Social Research; Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts; Mannes College The New School for Music; The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music; The New School for Drama; Parsons The New School for Design; and The New School for Public Engagement.
The New School offers online degrees programs and certificates for students who are unable to attend a traditional college due to other personal or professional commitments. Some of the online degree programs offered at the Â鶹Íø are BA/BS in Liberal Arts; AAS in Fashion Marketing; MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL); Fashion Business; Media Management; Design Business; Screenwriting; and Graphic and Digital Design.
The Â鶹Íø also offers an array of continuing education classes online. The courses range from Photoshop to media, health, culture and social change. The New School’s vibrant mix of continuing education courses includes classes that address contemporary and historical topics, and are designed to build skills and inspire creativity.
Admission requirements for the various academic divisions at the New School may differ. However, most of them require the students to send the completed application form, along with official transcripts, and scores for ACT/ SAT or any equivalent test. Getting a transfer to the institute is easy. Applicants must send the completed application form along with the official transcripts from previously attended institutes.
The New School also encourages international students to apply for admission. However, applicants must follow the specific admission requirements. Students from non-English speaking countries must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test or any other equivalent test to provide a proof of their proficiency in English language.
The New School offers financial aid programs to help needy students and their parents pay for college. The Office of Student Financial Services (SFS) administers an all-inclusive program of financial assistance and financing options for the students. The institute offers financial assistance through diverse mediums such as grants, scholarships, loans, and federal work-study programs. All students seeking financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
Grants and scholarships are gift aids that need not be returned. Some of the grants and scholarships are Federal Pell Grant; Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG); CHCI Scholarship; Arts Scholarship for Mature Women; Letters Scholarship for Mature Women; 2010 Women’s Forum Education Award; Edward J. McFadden Scholarship; Albert Shanker College Scholarship Fund; The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship; and Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarship.
Students at the New School can also opt for the student loans, however this type of financial aid must be returned with interest. Some of the loans include Undergraduate Federal Plus; William D. Ford Direct Student Loans; Private Student Loans; Federal Perkins Loan; and Graduate Federal Plus. The institute also offers federal work-study programs to enable the students take up part-time jobs to pay for college.
The Office of Student Development supports the institute’s educational mission by facilitating students with meaningful campus life outside the classroom. The students are encouraged to participate in a range of cultural, leadership, social, educational, and recreational experiences. The campus is home to a variety of student clubs and organizations. Students can either join an existing organization or start a new one. Some of the registered student organizations are Association for International Development (AID); New School Science Club; PhotoFeast; Student Film Collective; Mountaineering Club; and New Light Opera.
The Office of Recreation offers diverse opportunities for students to become physically active and make new friends for life. Their mission is to bring recreation and sports to the student body. The various structured and non-structured programs serve to increase the positive social interaction and build the community. The programs and activities are designed for the students at all levels of knowledge, ability, experience, and interest.
The New School owns many libraries throughout the New York City and is a member of the Research Library Association of South Manhattan. In 2009, its libraries housed a total of 1,906,046 holdings. Some of their libraries are Fogelman Social Sciences and Humanities Library; Visual Resource Center; Kellen Archives; Scherman Music Library; and Adam and Sophie Gimbel Design Library.
The New School Free Press is the student run newspaper, widely distributed throughout the campus.
WNSR is the student-operated, faculty-advised online radio station, which also operates at the Â鶹Íø.
The New School also publishes several journals such as Constellations, Social Research, The Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal; International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society; New School Economic Review; New School Psychology Bulletin; and The Journal of Design Strategies.
The New School’s athletic department sponsors a variety of men’s and women’s teams that participate in diverse sports such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, and so on. The colors are Yellow, Orange, and Red. The Â鶹Íø also organizes extra-curricular classes in yoga, meditation, salsa dance, karate, and t’ai.
